Gen. Robert Cardenas was a top USAF test pilot. He personally picked Chuck Yeager for his "speed of sound" X-1 flight, and even flew the B-29 that "dropped him off" at high altitude to make hs record-breaking run. Cardenas is best known for being the chief test pilot for Northrop's radical "flying wing" design, the YB-49. One of the two test planes later crashed, killing all aboard, including good friend Glenn Edwards. Cardenas was on a leave of absence, but was called back shortly after the crash.
